What to DO in Louisville
There’s a saying in Louisville that goes something like this –the question isn’t what to do, it’s what to do next. Before and after the event, there are endless things to see and do. And for those who bring their spouses and families, there is a wide variety of offerings for the young and the young at heart.
Start off by seeing the place where art and history comes to life and greets you on the street. Museum Row on Main houses nine original attractions all within a six-block radius that is easily walked. The Muhammad Ali Center tells the story of Louisville’s own native son. America’s pastime comes alive at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. It’s all things Kentucky at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. Science is fun at the Louisville Science Center. Artistic glass is to be seen to be believed at Glassworks. Daniel Boone, George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, General George Custer and Geronimo have stories to tell at the Frazier History Museum. Contemporary art is the focus at 21C Museum Hotel. See what makes Kentucky shine at the KentuckyShow!, then stick around and see a Broadway show at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. Top off the day and celebrate Louisville’s bourbon heritage by raising a glass at 14 world-famous bars and restaurants along the Urban Bourbon Trail. This passport program rewards visitors who complete the trail with some special bourbon merchandise.
Exploring our endless possibilities will work up an appetite – so you’re in the right city. Louisville has steadily gained notice as one of the country’s most vital restaurant scenes. Visitors from around the world are astounded by the variety and quality of fine dining offered in the area by chefs, many who have taken regional cuisine to a nationally recognized level. The arena district in downtown Louisville is quickly becoming the place to eat, drink and be merry. Five new restaurants have opened in the past year, with several more to open soon. A stop at any of the “Louisville Originals” promises a great dining experience. This collection of over 50 locally-owned and independent restaurants showcases the vitality of Louisville dining. f you want to combine dining and entertainment, then Fourth Street Live! is the place to be. Located in the heart of downtown this is the city’s premier dining and entertainment district. On and off the beaten path, whatever your interest, there’s always something going on in Louisville.
And no visit to Louisville is complete until you have experienced the world-famous Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum. The Kentucky Derby Museum completed a multi-million dollar renovation in 2010. The museum showcases everything Kentucky Derby - fashion, hats, traditions, celebrity appearances, and insights from the horse trainers themselves. It’s the next best thing to being at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May for the actual “run for the roses.” A great stop for family fun! The museum is also the exclusive tour provider for historic Churchill Downs offering three different tours of the track.
There’s a lot to do in Louisville…as in, whatever you want.
